Map 10. The expedition’s route, November 15, 1805–March 22, 1806.

NOVEMBER 14, 1805. The party was stuck and without defense against the wind-borne water and heavy rains that seemed to come at them from every direction. During the night one of the canoes was damaged by being dashed against rocks during high tide. At about ten this morning Wahkiakums, who seemed to glide through the high, rolling waves with ease, came for a visit. While two women waited in the canoe at a distance, three men came ashore and reported that they had seen Colter, Willard, and Shannon. At about this time Colter returned by land, having broken the lock on his gun, and disclosed that these very Indians had stolen a gig and basket from him. Considering how they had been welcomed, Clark was incensed that they would steal from the party. He demanded that the women bring the boat to shore and return the pilfered items, but it took the threat of gunfire to get the loot back. He then ordered them all out of camp.

Colter informed the captains that he and his comrades had gone as far as possible with the canoe against the waves and that Willard and Shannon had gone ahead on foot. Colter also brought good news. He explained that it was only a short distance around the point to a good harbor with a beautiful and spacious sand beach. Lewis decided to leave the main party and go by land to see if the reports of white traders in the vicinity were true. He also wanted to compare the terrain with maps from George Vancouver’s 1792 travels in the area, particularly to discover Vancouver’s Baker (“Haley’s”) Bay. Drouillard, Joseph and Reuben Field, and Frazer joined the captain. At three in the afternoon they set out in one of the large canoes, manned by five others who would drop them at Colter’s spot and return to camp. The canoe party returned at dusk, having dropped Lewis and party at the appointed spot and with their boat now half filled with water. The river did not give up its ways to newcomers so easily.
